BARROW HEDGES PRIMARY SCHOOL GOVERNING BODY

The Governing Body at Barrow Hedges consists of 14 members of the local and school community. It works closely with the Senior Leadership Team to oversee the strategic direction of the school. It does this by offering support, constructive advice, a sounding board for ideas, and help where needed. It challenges, asks questions and seeks information to ensure that the best interests of the children at Barrow Hedges are met. All governors work on a voluntary basis.

ROLE OF THE GOVERNING BODY

Establishing the strategic direction, by:

  • Setting the vision, values, and objectives for the school
  • Setting all necessary policies to meet the vision, values and objectives set
  • Agreeing the school improvement strategy with priorities and targets
  • Meeting statutory duties

Ensuring accountability, by:

  • Appointing the Headteacher
  • Monitoring progress towards targets
  • Performance managing the Headteacher
  • Engaging with stakeholders
  • Contributing to school self-evaluation

Ensuring financial probity, by:

  • Setting the budget, including numbers of staff and their pay
  • Monitoring spending against the budget
  • Ensuring value for money is obtained
  • Ensuring risks to the school are managed

THE GOVERNING BODY

There are four categories of governor: parent governors elected by parents; staff governors elected by staff; Local Authority governor appointed by the London Borough of Sutton; and co-opted governors appointed by the Governing Body. In addition, the Headteacher has exercised her right to be a governor. The number of governors in each category is shown below:

Headteacher 1
Parent Governor 3
Staff Governor 1
Local Authority Governor 1

Co-opted Governors (Governors have agreed that 1 co-opted governor will be a member of staff and 2 will be prioritised for parents)

The Governing Body uses a skills audit to aid recruitment and ensure there is a breadth of skills, knowledge and perspectives.

The Full Governing Body (FGB) usually meets once a term, towards the end of the term to discuss issues and make decisions. The FGB delegates many responsibilities to committees, individuals or the Headteacher, however the FGB remains accountable for these decisions. We have 2 main committees who meet at least once a term: Curriculum and Standards and Resources. Additionally, since schools became individually responsible for the pay of teachers (and Pay Policy) we have a Pay Committee which meets in the Autumn Term. On occasions there may be a short-term need to have a working party for a specific issue to work on the FGBs behalf. There is currently a working party responsible for overseeing the building work at the school, the New Build Working Party. Chairs and vice-chairs also meet at the start of each term to plan for the committee meetings for the term, the Governors’ Planning Group.  Full terms of reference for the main committees can be found on this page (see tab at bottom).

The Headteacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the Governing Body. There are a variety of documents at the bottom of this page which provide further important information.
