Gods & Mortals - Autumn 1

In this section...

This topic transports us back in history to Ancient Greece where we learn about the fantastical world full of mythical creatures and legendary heroes and gods, such as, Poseidon, Apollo, Artemis and Zeus. At the start of the topic, we take part in a workshop where we dress as a Greek god, learn about significant events, play games that were typically played and even take part in our own Ancient Greek Olympics!

Throughout the topic, we learn about a number of Greek myths and go on to write our own as well as a focus on character descriptions and diary writing. We combine this work with our Computing learning as we create a storyboard to make a animation program.

We find out about the origins of democracy and understand the difference between Athens and Sparta using our debating skills. We also explore the Greek Theatre and how this played an important role in the way of life for Ancient Greeks. As part of this, in D&T, we investigate, design and make our own Greek masks.

Although the main focus for this topic is History, we also have lots of fun making and decorating Pandora’s boxes, linking to our learning of 3D shapes in Maths. In addition to this, we make our own Ancient Greek vases in Art.

We use our Ancient Greece focus to learn more about modern day Greece in Geography, its location in mainland Europe, its environmental and physical features and how these compare with maps of Ancient Greece.

We study 'Light' in Science and learn how light travels, how shadows are created and explore why they change size. We research the dangers of the Sun and how we can protect our eyes from this.

Our Music genre this half term is 'R&B' and PE lessons comprise of Gymnastics and Football.

RE explores 'How Does Faith Helps Us? and Harvest, thinking about how faith can help people and provide them with strength.

During this half term in PHSE we explore the theme 'New Beginnings'. We focus on the different kinds of responsibility in school and how we can stay positive when faced with new challenges.

Year 3 is an exciting as we begin to learn French! We learn how to greet each other, say our names...and much, much more!
