Barrow Hedges Primary School

I am Warrior - Autumn 1

In this section...

To kick start this topic we take part in an exciting Roman Workshop where we meet a real life Roman soldier called Titus! We explore a range of fascinating artefacts, play a thrilling Roman game and even have the opportunity to take part in some gladiator style games in a Colosseum. Our History focus continues as we learn about why the Roman invasion was successful and how successful Boudica's revolt was against the Romans. We learn about what life was like in Roman Britain and the legacy of the Romans still evident today.

We link our D&T learning to our study of the Romans as we design and make a Roman shield and in Art we focus on creating Roman-style mosaics.

Our Geography work concentrates on Italy. We recap the locations and names of oceans, continents and European countries. We use maps to compare and contrast modern day Italy to Ancient Italy, focusing on why people settled where they did and explore the reasons why some people prefer to live in the countryside rather than the city. WE then use all our knowledge of the Romans to create a wiki page in Computing.

In Music we continue with Wider Opps and learn either the cello or violin and PE lessons comprise of Swimming and Hockey.

In RE we study Judaism and consider the importance of prayer and Shema to Jewish people. During Harvest we find out about the Christian belief of preserving and looking after the world for future generations.

During this half term in PHSE we explore the theme 'New Beginnings'. We focus on what it feels like to be in an unfamiliar setting and decide upon rules for our classroom. We explore and talk about the risks when near railway lines.

Our Relationships Education focuses on protecting our bodies and understanding personal boundaries, including FGM. We also learn about the different types of relationships and reflect on the non-physical differences between male and female.

In French we learn about the weather, colours and the alphabet.
