Off with Her Head - Autumn 2In this section...
Our second topic in Year 5 has a history focus and gives us a great insight into the beginnings of modern monarchy and how British religion has changed over time. Our visit to Hampton Court really helps to bring it all alive!
We study King Henry VIII and his six wives, as well as how Henry VIII created the Church of England. We have the opportunity to write our own biographies, news articles and persuasive letters. We also look at the Tudor lifestyle of both adults and children, as well as studying Tudor art work and heraldry. In PE we learn and perform Tudor dances as well as play tennis, looking at how this has changed over time. We study Tudor portraits in Art and use these to create our own ones. As part of our D&T learning, we design and make Tudor samplers.
Remaining with a UK theme, we study the UK in Geography where we learn to identify the different geographical features and talk knowledgeably about the countries which make up the UK. We also look more closely at the coastline, the seas and oceans and the rivers.
In French we combine with Music in learning to sing a carol ready for our Christmas performance as well as learning the names for food and linking our growing knowledge of French to begin to talk in short phrases.
Our PHSE theme this half term is 'Getting on and Falling out' where we show we understand the different types of relationships and develop our understanding of anger. We discuss the consequences for different types of behaviour and the impact bullying can have on people.
Fast forwarding to the modern day, in Computing we become 'Game Developers' and use our skills to plan, create and debug any errors to produce a game for others inspired by our Tudor knowledge.
